Choosing sympathy flowers for the funeral car

There are many options available when choosing the sympathy flowers for the funeral car. The family of the deceased may wish to consider the opportunity to dress both the coffin and the hearse. Some arrangements are suitable for displaying in the window of the car whilst others can be placed on the top of the coffin. Handcrafted arrangements can be personally selected or a unique design can be put together especially specifically for the bereaved.

Dressing the car

The following types of arrangements are popular for displaying in the window of the funeral car. These flowers will be on show as the coffin makes its way to the service. One or a combination of the following could thus be chosen for this purpose:
  • Wreaths: a traditional ring arrangement of flowers, the wreath represents the never ending circle of life.
  • Named tributes: a personal arrangement in the shape the deceased's name. This can be a touching reminder, which can be placed along the edge of the coffin, in the window of the funeral car. Traditionally this type of tribute is only provided by the close family. The named tribute usually rests against the side of the coffin in the window of the car. Instead of the persons name it is particularly poignant to spell out their relationship to those who are giving the tribute, for example, mum or son.
  • Different shaped designs: a personally designed arrangement may be made more unique by choosing a different shaped design such as a star, a diamond or another personal tribute. Examples include items which reflect a person's profession or hobby, for instance a musical instrument.
It should also be remembered that very large arrangements will not be suitable to place in the funeral car. you may wish to save these for the service. Conversely, a lot of small bouquets may not be ideal as they can be problematic and time consuming for the funeral directors when it comes to numerous moves involved in a cortege and funeral service. The bouquets need to be resilient to transportation and regular movement throughout the day so silk flowers offer a key advantage over fresh arrangements here.

Dressing the coffin

The flowers which are chosen to decorate the coffin will be on top of the coffin for the funeral precession and will remain there for the ceremony. The coffin arrangement thus sets the tone for the flowers used for the whole of the funeral:-
  • Coffin sprays: designed specifically to adorn the top of the coffin with a classical elegance, they rest along the length of the coffin. These arrangements are usually made of a simple oasis into which the foliage and flowers are arranged. Adornments such as berries can also be added. Coffin sprays are available in a range of sizes so can be tailored to the size suitable to the size of the coffin. A lavish ceremony may involve the top of the coffin being totally covered with a flower arrangement.
  • Crosses: the coffin cross is an alternative to the coffin spray. A cross placed on top of the coffin which compliments the shape of the coffin well. A cross may be appropriate for the ceremony particularly if the departed was a practicing Christian. The cross is striking in its simplicity, a design which is often best executed with the use of just one type of flower, such as a rose or a carnation.
  • Pillows: flowers can be arranged in a pillow or cushion shape. This design can be pleasant as it conveys the idea that the loved one who has passed on is in a state of restfulness or peace.
  • Posies: posies are smaller arrangements, set into a round base. Due to their size it can be a good choice to have a posy on a child's coffin ensuring that the coffin is not overwhelmed.
Flower colours

When choosing the flowers for a funeral car it is important for the bereaved to think about the message that they wish to convey. In addition to the arrangement itself, the colour chosen will may convey a degree of symbolism and will significantly affect the ambience and atmosphere of the occasion:
  • White: if you would like to convey simplicity and purity, white is the obvious choice for the colour scheme for the flowers. White also works well as a base for other colours, such as blue.
  • Burgundy: a traditional choice for funeral flowers is a dark red or burgundy which has a visual richness.
  • Pink: pink flowers offer a pretty scheme and are a popular choice for a child's funeral, in particular a pink posy arrangement.
  • Orange: for a vibrant celebratory feel to the ceremony, bright colours such as orange should be considered.
  • Bright red: a striking choice and a variation on the more traditional burgundy theme for the flowers.
  • Lime green: this is a more contemporary choice for flowers, perhaps mixed with other bright colours such as fuchsia.
  • Violet and blue: soft violets and blues are a notably restful choice for the flowers.
Silk flowers

Silk flowers can be advantageous for two primary reasons. Firstly, during a funeral ceremony a flower arrangement will almost certainly need to be moved several times. This will probably include movement to and from the car, into the church or crematorium for the ceremony and then perhaps onto the internment. It is therefore necessary to choose flowers which can withstand this without risking damage to the arrangement. Silk flowers can of course be kept permanently, either on the grave or at home, as a reminder of and a tribute to the deceased. The second key advantage is that, unlike fresh flowers, silk flowers are not seasonal. All flower types and colours are available regardless of the season.

The flowers used in the funeral car thus go some way towards setting the tone for the entire funeral, so the style and colours should be chosen carefully. When decorating the funeral car, tributes to rest in the car window and on top of the coffin should be considered. Consider using silk bouquets as this will ensure the arrangements withstand movement throughout the day without compromising on aesthetics. Silk bouquets are beautiful and enduring memorial.
