Choosing sympathy flowers for the cemetery

Flowers have always been an integral part of saying goodbye to a loved one, as they can be used to express emotions that cannot be expressed in any other way. When choosing sympathy flowers for the cemetery the bereaved should consider the position of the grave. The outdoor environment requires sympathy flowers for the cemetery to be long lasting and weather durable. Deer can often be found roaming in cemeteries and will readily eat fresh flowers. Silk arrangements may thus be advantageous, as they will sustain less damage from the elements and the deer than fresh flowers. During a burial, the coffin will still be adorned with the coffin spray, which decorates it throughout the day. After the burial, flowers that were used during the funeral service may end up on the grave. Since for most people, the cemetery is the final resting place, it may be appropriate to leave long lasting floral tributes to make the graveside a personal and peaceful site of remembrance.

Funeral flower arrangements

There are many different arrangements of flowers for a funeral, some of which can be used for the whole day and then placed on the grave. Alternatively flowers can be specifically chosen to be laid at the cemetery. The flower arrangements that may be suitable for a grave side include:
  • Wreaths: the wreath is a traditional funeral flower arrangement. It is a circle of flowers, which is a very powerful symbol, since it has no beginning and no end. To some people it is a representation of god who is eternal. Outside of religious symbolism it still represents eternity. Even if a loved one is no longer here in body, they will still be remembered and their essence will always be a part of those who were close to them in life. The grave is a place where these feelings may be particularly strong so it is a fitting place to lay a wreath. Any selection of flowers and foliage work well in a wreath.
  • Hearts: a heart tribute is a reminder of the compassion felt for someone who has passed on and for those who are bereaved. A heart is a universal symbol for love so if the bereaved wish to lay a heart in the cemetery it will convey the way in which they felt for the departed. As the heart is also a symbol of love it is well complimented by the traditional flower of love, the red rose. This can be trimmed with ivy for a traditional memorial.
  • Pillow: this represents an everlasting peaceful sleep, symbolic for lying in rest for eternity.
  • Posy: a posy is a traditional use of flowers, set into a simple round oasis, often associated with children. It is a suitable arrangement to be given by a child or to be laid on the grave of a child. Using a soft pink rose makes a very pretty posy. It is a simple design which can, if desired, be detailed with diamante charms.
  • Cross: the cross is the most powerful of all traditional Christian symbols. It is not necessary to use a complicated mixture of flowers and colours. An arrangement of white roses or carnations in a cross shape makes a striking memorial.
  • Other tributes: it may be the wish for the family of the deceased to design a tribute that has a special meaning to them and to their loved one. This could be related to interests that they had in life such as a musical instrument for a musician or an anchor for a sailor. Other symbols may be used which hold memories, such as a star. Some tributes that are particularly suitable for children include a teddy bear or butterfly as a floral tribute. With bespoke designs widely available it is possible to create any unique design.
  • Bouquet in a vase or basket: it may be felt that it is not necessary to offer any particular symbolism in the floral tribute and that the flowers alone convey the required message. In this case a bouquet or a basket of flowers is all that may be needed for the grave. A bouquet can simply be laid on the grave loosely tied with a ribbon, or placed in a vase. Lilies, poppies and carnations are popular flowers to choose for a funeral bouquet.
There are a large number of options available when choosing flower arrangements for the cemetery. The most important things to consider are the emotions that the flowers should express. The need to feel right to the person giving them and to suit the person on whose grave they are to be placed. With deer and the elements to factor in, it is worth considering a silk arrangement which offers the advantage of durability.
