Silk flowers in the garden
British weather is dominated by the coming and going of the seasons. Within the span of three months the flowers in your garden will bud, bloom and wilt, and as autumn and winter take hold of the life in your soil, one might have to live with a garden, conservatory and house saddened by a lack of floral colour and the beauty of foliage.
Silk flowers can help to bring a spark to your garden. They may not be real flowers, but with the ever-changing weather patterns in the country, silk flowers can provide a long-lasting attraction back to your garden and indeed the home.
Silk flowers were once made of pure silk. However nowadays, modern artificial flowers are crafted with a variety of materials to produce the realistic effects now seen. They are far from being the old hard green plastic leaves and tough cloth-like feel to the petals. Rather, they are botanically-correct designs where natural flowers are examined and replicated accordingly. A silk flower is also given a special finish so as to give a life-like texture, for example, ironing the fabric used can replicate the distinctive shine that tulips have; or using a particular type of fabric such as Peachskin, a suede fabric, provides a velvety feel to the petals when creating magnolias. <br><br>
Silk flowers can be tailored to compliment natural flowers in your garden and can thus come in a whole array of forms, types and colours, for example, you can get posies, orchids, gerberas, lilies, roses, magnolia, anthuriums, bluebells, carnations, daffodils, forget-me-nots, geraniums, gladiolus, hibiscus… and an abundant list of floral specialties.
Colour, grain, depth, shine, and other attributes to flora and foliage are replicated in silk flowers to replicate as closely as possible the natural delights of the plant world. There are thus a wide variety of materials used, in that silk flowers may in fact be made of silk, polyester, parchment, latex, velvet, and may have special coatings and treatments applied to them to ensure that they resemble the real thing as closely as possible. Individual arrangements can be created where, one stem could have but one bud, whilst another could have several buds and blooms and perhaps an array of leaf arrangements to compliment the stem.
The unpredictability, poor durability and disease risk of natural flowers and arrangements is of course absent with silk flowers. Thus, within your garden, on the patio, in the conservatory and elsewhere, silk flowers can assure longevity and add some balance in the low season when the rest of the garden may not be at its best. Silk flowers can be potted, wall hanging, within a bowl, as pomanders, in a basket, foliage, ivy garlands, located in troughs or planters -- in fact almost anywhere, limited only by your imagination.
The principal advantages to silk flowers are that they are low maintenance -- perhaps an occasional dusting might be in order, as indeed with natural plants; they don't need watering; there is no need for deadheading; they don't attract insects; there is no pollen for sufferers of allergies; and they bear flowers, foliage and fruit all year round. Silk flowers can also be positioned anywhere as they don't require sunlight. Their size is of course fixed -- there is no waiting for them to grow or the need for pruning to remove excess growth. They have no long term running costs; they are durable and -- perhaps most importantly -- they are created precisely to your specification.
Silk flowers are truly a delight as they give character, colour and personality to your garden. Your individuality can be captured and expressed through silk flower design, creating a spectacle in your back garden.
